A - Housemaids Housemaids should be referred to by their first name and should not be present upstairs when there are visitors. They are responsible for keeping the house clean and tidy at all times as well as making and changing beds. Some housemaids also act as a lady's maid but should follow this section in terms of reference and clothing. B - Footman Footmen should be referred to by their first name and should be present upstairs when there are visitors to open doors and announce their entry into a room. They are responsible for bringing meals from the kitchens to the dining room as well as carrying suitcases to the guest's room. C - Lady's Maid Lady's maids should be referred to as Miss [Last Name] and should not be present upstairs when there are visitors. They are responsible for helping a lady of the house get ready for the day and also to make sure that their room is kept to a high standard as well as tasks such as sewing damaged clothes. Some lady's maids take on another job if they are required to do so but should follow this section in terms of reference and clothing. D - Butler The butler should be referred to as Mr Crofts and should be present upstairs when there are visitors to welcome them to the estate and inform the family of their arrival. He is responsible for ensuring that all male servants are doing their jobs properly as well as most actions involving the front entrance. E - Housekeeper The housekeeper should be referred to as Mrs Stow and may be present upstairs when there are visitors if her presence is required. She is responsible for ensuring that all female servants are doing their job properly and making sure that requests from the family are passed on to the relevant servants. F - Valet Valets should be referred to as Mr [Last Name] and may be present upstairs when there are visitors if their presence is required. They are responsible for helping a lord of the house get fready for the day and also to make sure that their room is kept to a high standard. They are responsible for keeping the kitchen clean and tidy as well as helping with the preparation of meals. H - Cook The cook should be referred to as Mrs McWilliams and should not be present upstairs. She is responsible for the preparation of meals as well as ensuring that all kitchen servants are doing their job properly. I - Chauffeur The chauffeur should be referred to by his last name and should only be present when he is needed. He is responsible for taking the family and visitors to and from their destinations as well as carrying luggage into the entrance hall. Gardener Gardeners should be referred to by their first name and should not be present in the main house. They are responsible for keeping the grounds tidy and maintaining plants and ornaments.
