Imagination is one of the things that makes us human. In losing the ability to dream and to create, we would lose our souls. The dark times in our lives would become unbearable because we would have no way to escape, or to imagine things ever getting better. Young lovers would be unable to envision their lives together through the years, and no one would set out to discover new things about the world that may have seemed impossible once.
In short, the world would become just what Mundane Monotony has always wanted it to be. Of the many things to plague humanity, Monotony may seem one of the most harmless. After all, if we never had a moment of the mundane and ordinary, how would we be able to recognize magic? But too much of it can indeed be fatal, to the mind if not the body.
Monotony has always resented humans’ general avoidance of it, and is jealous of their ability to dream up all kinds of fantastic characters. Only now, it has come up with a plan to reshape the world to its liking. It will banish these characters from beloved fairytales and legends to an Island that exists between worlds, forever inaccessible to humans. With no contact between them, humans would eventually forget about these characters, and the ability to imagine would be lost. Once it had exiled enough characters, it thought, it would be able to influence humanity to accept its reign forever.
But what Monotony doesn’t realize is that the characters humans brought to life through imagination can also dream, imagine, and create – and that meant that, even on the Island, they could still reach out to humans who loved them, preventing its evil scheme from working.
Of course, the characters’ imagination has other strange effects on the Island. Every time someone new arrives, the Island grows a little, expanding to include some representation of whatever the newcomer thinks of as home. It doesn’t usually get things quite right, however, especially if multiple characters arrive at around the same time. For example, it seems to have placed the alligators that belonged in New Orleans quite firmly in the new swamps of “Germany”.
The end result is that the Island is an odd mishmash of various places and times, but hey, at least that means you’ll find somewhere that seems familiar… mostly...
